My Palm project
In the year 2002 the idea of my own homepage developed in my mind. But it was quite impossible to build it with my "oldie"-PC and in addition my Palm IIIc already had been become my "primary" computer system.
Aside from that I wanted a pure and plain site without lots of graphic embellishment. This all led to the conclusion to create a site in a palmfriendly format. And all the respective work should be able to be performed with the Palm itself.
After some investigation I was able to continue:
- The planning was done with the outliner"Brainforest" by Aportis. It is not freeware but I already had it. You can also use paper notes (boh!) or the freeware "Progect".
- The HTML-documents are written in the built-in memo application. The first line is the file name and after it the source text follows. But the pages are limited to the 4k-barrier of the memos.
- For previewing the pages I use the Palm-browser "Xiino" (successor of "Palmscape") by Ilinx. It offers to display and render the memos with HTML-code offline. This aplication is not freeware either but you can do without previewing.
- For uploading the pages and Palm-files to the ftp-server I use "LFtp". This aplication by Laurent Thaler (http://lthaler.free.fr) is freeware and easy to use. With the command "pubm name.htm" the memos were uploaded to the fileserver.
- Images are the weakpoint. With my IIIc I only have the possibility to transfer Palmpix images as jpg-files with the aplication "Pixemail" by Ninelocks by ftp protocol. It is not freeware but also not absolutely necessary.
Also the registration and arrangement at my host's website should be done by the Palm too. Unfortunately not all objects at its site are displayable with "Xiino" (e.g. Java elements). So the setup of the domain and links for counter and guest book were done with a PC.
If you like you may work with HTML- editor aplications. There are "PHTML" and "Torpedo". But they cost money and have no real benefits. Just "Torpedo" breaks the 4k-limit. The procedure itself is the same as described before.
The 4k-limit of memos can also be broken with the freeware "zdocm", a text editor which can create any long Palm-doc. For this the corresponding set of memos are seamlessly joined together. "MemoSplit" is another possibility.
A helpful tool too, is the DA-aplication "LClipDA" which allows you 10 large clipboards. It helps you e.g. with often used tags. Of course you need a DA-launcher for it.
Despite all odds it is very interesting, convenient and completely up to date to maintain the site anywhere and everytime. With GPRS it is even not so expensive when you are on the road.
